The Funeral directing business of William H. Painter originally started at the turn of the 20th Century as a horse-drawn taxi
business.
In 1907, through a chance encounter with a friend, whose mother had passed away, calling for a horse-drawn taxi to take him to the nearest undertaker William, with his usual enterprise, offered to undertake the funeral himself.
From those modest beginnings the company has grown through the years from a little cottage on the corner of Church Road opposite the Swan Hotel, South Yardley, to the spacious premises of the present day. Today branches can also be found in Solihull, Knowle,
Chelmsley Wood and Castle Bromwich.
During this time the business has managed to produce two Freemen of the City of London, a Councillor and Alderman of the City of Birmingham, two presidents of the National Association of Funeral Directors and six presidents of the Birmingham Funeral
Directors Guild. The five generations of the family have always been, and still are, deeply involved in maintaining and, where possible, improving the standard of service through local and national associations.
Our transport has progressed from horse-drawn coaches and Cadillac limousines to the present day fleet of modern limousines. Our premises at Yardley Road have recently been completely refurbished, including the addition of extra rooms in our chapels of rest.
Currently the business is managed by Philip Painter a fifth generation Painter, with the assistance of his father Stephen, uncle John and third cousin Samuel.
At William H. Painter we aim to provide a service based on our long established experience and traditional family values whilst understanding the changing wishes of today’s community.
