It is not compulsory to have a reading and there are no rules about who the reader should be. Many funerals include readings of relevance to the life of the deceased. Traditionally, readings at funerals were passages taken from the Bible, having said this, readings don't have to be religious, it could be any piece of literature.
Nowadays more and more people want to add a more personal touch to the service taking inspiration from different forms of literature such as sayings, poems, proverbs, and quotes.
Writing your own words is perhaps the most personal way to say goodbye - you can always get someone else to read them for you if you feel unable to.
